Heaven

On my trip to see my family, I had to make an even more important stop, a stop at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Last time I came through here the wife and kids were with me and we were in the mini-van. I did ask to go on the flats to look at the cars, and she said "no". so we looked at the cars on the flats from affar.

This time I was "in charge".

as I was alone...

I fueled up at the speedway gas station. Went inside to ask if there was a way to go out on the flats... no one was inside. I needed to use the little boys room, so I went back there and there I saw a mexican guy mopping the floors. I asked him if there was a way to put my car on the salt so I could get some pictures. He told me the salt was too wet that I would probably get stuck. I kinda knew that. But he told me that I should go down to the end of the access road and look for my self.

So I headed out, following the signs to a little two lane blacktop access road. It went beyond the horizon. You could see the heat of the early morning sun glimmering on the road. I drove at a slow speed as I had no clue when the road would end. After a few miles I came to a cul-de-sac. At the end was hard packed salt that I could drive on to. I looked into the distance and saw a 4x4 truck out on the salt.

So I pulled out onto the hard pack and sat there, then saw the 4x4 coming back towards me. They pulled up and got out and we talked about the MR2 and the salt flats for about 40 minutes or so. Cool guys. One worked at a local race track and was showing his visiting buddy the flats. They offered to take my picture with the car...

After they left I took out my Sony DSLR and started taking picture of my beloved MR2 Spyder.

here are a couple of my favorites

After I took the images I realized I was not sweating on that very hot morning. Then I got in my car in the A/C and started sweating, I guess the sweat was evaporating instantly!
I love that place. It got the same feelings I got when I stepped in the track at Le Mans and Daytona. The history of what has took place here is what makes it special. The bleakness and the absolute lack of color. It was just pure awesome. If you have a chance to go through the salt flats of Utah, please, make a stop, drive to the end of the access road. It is well worth seeing.

On the ride back on the road, I was able to take my car up to some serious speeds. The 2ZZ powered 2001 MR2 eats up the road very very fast!

Hope you enjoy the images.
